Young drivers in Ekaterinburg got free classes on defensive driving

02 October 2015

According to the State Road Traffic Inspectorate statistics, young drivers are accountable for a significant number of road accidents. This fact highlight the need for improving driving culture, especially when it comes to big cities with busy road traffic. Being the 4th most populated city in Russia, Ekaterinburg is not an exception. From October 1 to October 4 of 2015, Ford Sollers and Road Safety Russia held a number of free practice classes in Ekaterinburg within the Ford Defensive Driving Academy program, aimed at teaching young drivers principles of defensive driving. More than 300 people in Ekaterinburg participated in the program and were able to acquire skills that one day might just save their lives.

Ford Defensive Driving Academy participants have been taught emergency braking, as it is collisions that are the most common cause of road accidents. With the help of special goggles, young drivers have been demonstrated how our perception changes under the influence of alcohol. Novice drivers have been able to see for themselves how dangerous it is to use any gadgets when driving, and how serious the consequences are when it comes to even one distracted second behind the wheel.

On October 1, the organizers held a conference in Ekaterinburg on the topic of road safety improvement in Russia. Deputy Head of the Sverdlovsk Region Department of the State Road Traffic Inspectorate at the Russian Ministry of Interior Alexey Gabdorakhmanov, Deputy Minister for Secondary and Professional Education of the Sverdlovsk Region Nina Juravlyova, President of the Ural Driving Schools Association Georgy Kovalenko, and Head of the Ford Defensive Driving Academy project Alexander Revsky attended the event.

“For more than ten years we have been working to reduce road accident rates involving young drivers in the region. Over the past two years, we’ve witnessed a significant decrease in the number of road accidents with young drivers at fault. Nevertheless, the problem remains urgent. It may be resolved with a series of measures, including additional educational programs for this category of road users”, – noted Deputy Head of the Sverdlovsk Region Department of the State Road Traffic Inspectorate at the Russian Ministry of Interior Alexey Gabdorakhmanov.

“Ford Defensive Driving Academy is held for the second time in Russia. Last year, we carried out trainings in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and Kazan, and were able to engage more than 400 people. Since then, we’ve analyzed the results, and upgraded the program by making it more interactive and eventful, by expanding the project geography, and by increasing the number of drivers-participants of the trainings”, – Deputy Head of Road Safety Russia Alexander Revsky commented on the results of the project.
