BMW Group Russia and Road Safety Russia instil the road safety habit in children from a young age

02 June 2014

The BMW M Festival 2014 for people who love speed and driving was held in Moscow on Saturday 24 May at the Luzhniki Olympic Stadium. While adults immersed themselves in the motorsport atmosphere, the event was exciting for youngsters also: with the support of NGO Road Safety Russia, the unique Junior Campus educational project ran activities for children throughout the day.

The Junior Campus area comprised three zones for young road users. The first zone was intended for future engineers: working on their own or with the help of Junior Campus teachers, children could construct their own little car from materials that were to hand. The second zone was a special track with children’s cars and motorbikes for young drivers to practice safe driving. In the third zone children could have their photograph taken again the Campus press wall and receive a certificate confirming that they had completed a course in road safety. Teachers worked with the youngsters throughout the whole day, educating them in the basics of safe behaviour on the roads, and also monitoring compliance with road traffic regulations on the track.

About 170 children visited the Junior Campus during the festival. As well as having a lot of fun, they all acquired useful knowledge about road safety.

The Junior Campus educational centre opened in Moscow in 2013, and more than 1800 children have visited it already. The interactive play-based programme developed by professional educators uses a light-hearted approach to familiarise children aged five to ten with the main road traffic regulations, establishing a correct understanding of road safety from an early age.
