Parents are asked to remind children the main provisions of Traffic Rules

26 August 2011

As the new school semester is about to begin the Traffic Police recommends that parents remind the children basic rules of safe behavior on the road.
"Usually every year in late August and early September we register the spike in the number of accidents involving junior pedestrians, - said the Deputy Head of the Chief Directorate on safety at the Russian Interior Ministry Maj. Gen. (Police) Vladimir Kuzin. - The reason is simple. During three months of summer school recess children simply forgot the traffic rules and decreased their alertness level on the road".
The general led gave an example of the sad outcome of the last Wednesday. Just for one day as many as five teenagers lost their lives in traffic accidents. In Tatarstan two accidents happened the same day - in Naberezhnye Chelny a truck driver struck a 15-year-old girl on "zebra" crossing and a tractor driver near Leninogorsk failed to spot on the road a boy of seven. In addition, in the Novgorod region at the 4 km mark of Novgorod-Luga highway "Lada" struck a 15-year scooter who unexpectedly entered the road right in front of the car. The boy was riding without a protection helmet. He died at the scene of the MVA.
In Sochi, Krasnodar Territory, driver of a foreign make car struck a woman with four-year-old daughter at the pedestrian road crossing. As a result the woman died. In Bashkortostan a 13-year-old schoolboy was run by a "Lada" car at the 23 km of the Ufa-Orenburg highway. The boy was crossing the road in company of adults but the group was not crossing the highway in the right place.
"These examples show once again that these are adults who are responsible for all these accidents. The parents failed to explain to children the rules of safe behavior on the road. Or drivers who did not pay attention to little pedestrians," - said Vladimir Kuzin.
"To avoid such tragedies remind your child on a regular basis the main provisions of the traffic rules. This training should be conducted by parents and teachers now because during the school recess the school children forgot about specificity of traffic in city", - said the deputy head of traffic police in Russia.
He also advised parents to take some time with children to walk the route from home to school and back. "You should explain in detail what is the safest was of crossing the road, what is the meaning of traffic signs, - said Vladimir Kuzin. – In my opinion the most important is to ensure that parents do not violate traffic rules themselves and teach children from an early age to follow the law-abiding behavior by setting personal role model. If a child sees that parents ride unfastened in the car, cross the road on the "red" traffic light and allow similar violations, the child naturally follows this example".
The Deputy Head of the Traffic Police reporting to the Russian Interior Ministry informed that for traffic police is also preparing for the new school semester. "Throughout the country we inspect the traffic pattern next to school buildings and kindergartens; we verify that traffic lights are fully operational, - said Vladimir Kuzin. - Special attention is paid to transporting children. All school buses undergo technical inspection. The drivers are given extra safety orientation".
