Road Traffic Safety Issues Discussed in Geneva

15 November 2011

Currently Russia remains one of the leading countries to reduce the fatality rates on the roads, said the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, police Colonel-General Viktor Kiryanov today addressing the 14 session on UN cooperation in the area of road safety. The meeting is taking place in Geneva.
General Kiryanov pointed out that for many years the road safety issue has been kept in focus in our country. In November 2009, Moscow hosted the First Global Ministerial Conference on traffic road safety under the slogan "Time to Act!» This was followed by development and enactment in March 2010 of the resolution of UN General Assembly that declared the period from 2011 to 2020 the Decade of Action to Improve Traffic Road Safety.
"Similar to many other states Russia took an active part in official opening of the program, - said Victor Kiryanov. - In particular, we initiated the address of the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to all interested parties. The address was published on the website of the World Health Organization and other relevant resources. The campaign was "Statement of the Persons of Decade" was rolled out. In the framework of the program the addresses to the citizens of the known cultural figures, prominent athletes, and politicians were made using the mass media to focus on the road safety issue».
In addition, Mr. Kiryanov mentioned that the Decade logo was shown in outdoor ads in combination with the message to observe the rules concerning the use of the safety belts, child restraints, to prevent drunk driving and respect pedestrians. On the eve of the official start the logo was projected on the building of the Lomonosov Moscow State University at Vorobyovy Hills.
"The work to meet the goals and objectives of the Decade is not limited to presentations and discussions, we also made significant system changes aimed at improving the road safety in the country", - said the Deputy Minister of Interior of Russia. According to him, "now we can talk about the tangible work accomplished during the first year of the Decade".
"Summing up the preliminary results of the federal focus program "Improving the Road Safety in 2006-2012", it should be noted that we were able to reverse the situation on the roads: the number of the motor vehicle accidents reduced by a factor of 1.5 compared to the base year of 2004, - said Victor Kiryanov. - According to statistics more than 34 thousand people were killed in 2004 in MVA, now this figure reduced by 23%. These results were achieved despite a significant increase in the number of cars in the country".
